US President Joe Biden arrived in Angola on his first and only trip to Africa as head of state to highlight US ambitions in Africa amid major investments from China.
The US President, who will hand over power to Donald Trump on January 20, is scheduled to hold talks with Angolan President Joao Lourenco in the capital, Luanda, on Tuesday, and will deliver statements at the National Slavery Museum.

Biden is scheduled to travel on Wednesday to the coastal city of Lobito, about 500 kilometers south of Luanda, to highlight the importance of American investment in the region. The port is at the heart of the Lobito Corridor project, a massive infrastructure project that has received loans from the United States, the European Union and others. Because of Biden’s visit, the Angolan government declared December 3 and 4 public holidays and took strict security measures in Luanda, which has a population of 9.5 million people.
White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Monday that the United States does not see the African continent as an arena for a new Cold War and does not want countries in the region to choose between Washington, Russia and China for cooperation. “There is no Cold War on the continent. We are not asking countries to choose between the United States, Russia and China. We are simply looking for reliable, sustainable and transparent investment opportunities that people in Angola and across Africa can count on,” Kirby told reporters.
