Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially abandoned his biggest dream: holding the World Friendship Games. The relevant order was signed, which was published on the country’s government legal website.
The decree signed by Putin stated: “By a special decision, the President of the Russian Federation postponed the holding of international sports competitions and the World Friendship Games.”
Russian media then contacted Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov to comment on the future of the international sporting event.
By order of the country’s president, Russia established the World Friendship Games as an alternative to the Olympic Games in Paris. The competitions were scheduled to be held from September 15 to 29 in Moscow and Yekaterinburg.
The reason for implementing the idea is the international sanctions imposed on the country due to the start of the war in Ukraine, including preventing Russian athletes from participating in international competitions using their national symbols.
Through the World Friendship Games, Vladimir Putin aimed to show that restrictions cannot break the spirit of Russian sport.
