The potential is huge. With this invention, the average German driver should be able to travel about 62 percent of his annual kilometers using solar energy alone, according to company estimates. In sunlit areas like Los Angeles, it is theoretically possible to drive on solar power 100% of the time. Excess energy can also be fed back to the home grid using bi-directional charging.
The new solar coating contains no rare earth elements or silicone, is based on non-toxic materials and Mercedes claims it is fully recyclable. In addition, the production is much cheaper than that of traditional solar modules.
