Tobacco GST becomes top trending topic on Google search | Trending News – haroonabadvital.com
The proposed increase in GST on soft drinks, cigarettes and tobacco to 35% pushed ‘GST on Tobacco’ to one of the top trending topics on Google on Tuesday morning. According to Google Trends, the topic has recorded 10,000 searches, reflecting a staggering 700% increase in interest in just four hours this morning.
The potential hike in GST marks the first major restructuring of tax rates under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework since its implementation seven years ago. A special rate of 35% is being considered on “sin goods”, including soft drinks, cigarettes and tobacco-related products.
The recommendation emerged from a meeting held by the Group of Ministers on Monday on price rationalization, which finalized its report ahead of the GST Council meeting scheduled for December 21. Besides the proposed “sin tax” rate, the Moroccan government also proposed changes to more than 148 items, including ready-to-wear clothing.
For apparel, the Bihar government, led by Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chowdhury, has recommended a tiered structure for GST:
- 5% for items priced up to INR 1,500,
- 18% for those between INR 1,500 to INR 10,000,
- 28% for clothes worth more than 10,000 pounds.
