The Constitutional Court confirmed the result of the first round of the presidential elections in Romania. The leader of the Union to Save Romania, Elena Lasconi, and the far-right candidate, Calin Georgescu, will head to the run-off on December 8. This was announced by Chief Justice Marian Iñaki in a live press conference. The BTA said the decision was made at a meeting held earlier this evening.

On Thursday, November 28, the court ordered the Central Electoral Office to recount the votes of the first round of the presidential elections, a decision that local media described as unprecedented for the country. This came after two separate appeals were submitted to the Constitutional Court to cancel the vote by two candidates who participated in the first round of the elections.

One of them was rejected late, and the other – MEP Christian Terhis – was accepted. He claimed that representatives of the Union to Save Romania committed violations in support of their candidate, Elena Lasconi, who came in second place. According to Tarhish, several votes were transferred from Ludovic Urban, who withdrew from the race in favor of Cotroceni, to Elena Lasconi. But in the three sections he mentioned in the complaint, it is not about fraud, but about errors that were corrected in the last minutes. Local media noted that the conclusion was that Elena Lasconi still had the same number of votes.

The head of Romania’s Permanent Electoral Authority (PEA) Toni Gribella said earlier today in an interview with Digi24 that the recount of votes from the first round of Romania’s presidential elections showed no significant differences. In the early afternoon, the body handed over all documents, along with the central vote, to the Constitutional Court.

The campaign for the second round of the presidential elections was supposed to begin on November 29.

This vote is the bankruptcy of the parties. This is how the far-right independent candidate Calin Georgescu commented on the results of the parliamentary elections in Romania. He commented in a video speech that this result was expected, and that the result of the parliamentary elections was the result of parliamentary decisions over the past 35 years.

“We are talking about the result of wrong decisions made by Romanian politicians, but also about the result of right decisions made by Romanians,” says Calin Georgescu.

A few days before the presidential runoff elections on December 8, he appealed for their support to pensioners, disabled people, Romanians abroad and various ethnic groups on the territory of Romania. He asked the same thing from the residents of the Republic of Moldova, then added:

“You will have my support for anything you think is good for your country.” Surprisingly, far-right independent candidate Calin Georgescu, who was little-known to the Romanian public, came in first place in the first round of the presidential election, relying mainly on campaigning by sharing videos on TikTok. The runoff will be held on December 8. Georgescu will next face the leader of the Union to Save Romania, Elena Lasconi.
